What is gigawatt hour?

The gigawatt hour (or gigawatt-hour) is a unit of energy equal to 3.6x1012 joules (1 GWh = 3.6x1012 J), the SI derived unit of energy. It is also equal to 3.6x109 kilojoules (kJ), or 8.6042065009x108 kilocalories (thermochemical) (kcal), or 3.6x1012 watt seconds (Ws), or 109 watt hours (Wh), or 1,000,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) or 1,000 megawatt hours (MWh).

The gigawatt hour is used for metering large amounts of electrical energy to industrial customers.
