What is volume?

Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space a solid, liquid or gas occupies. The standard unit of volume in the International System of Units (SI) is the cubic meter (m3). Common units of volume currently in use include liters (L), deciliters (dL), milliliters (mL), barrels (bl), gallons (gal), quarts (qt), pints (pt), fluid ounces (fl oz), cubic centimeters (cm3), cubic inches (cu in), cubic feet (cu ft), cubic yards (cu yd), cups, tablespoons (tbsp.) and teaspoons (tsp).

Common volume conversions

  • 1 cubic millimeter (mm3) = 10-9 cubic meters (m3) = 10-6 liters (L) = 1 microliter (μL)
  • 1 cubic centimeter (cm3) = 10-6 cubic meters (m3) = 10-3 liters (L) = 1 milliliter (mL)
  • 1 cubic decimeter (dm3) = 10-3 cubic meters (m3) = 1 liter (L) = 103 milliliters (mL)
  • 1 cubic meter (m3) = 103 liters (L) = 1 kiloliter (kL)

  • 1 cubic hectometer (hm3) = 106 cubic meters (m3) = 109 liters (L) = 1 gigaliter (GL)
  • 1 cubic kilometer (km3) = 109 cubic meters (m3) = 1012 liters (L) = 1 teraliter (TL)
  • 1 cubic meter (m3) = 35.3146667 cubic feet (cu ft) = 1.30795062 cubic yards (cu yd)
  • 1 cubic centimeter (cm3) = 0.0610237441 cubic inches (cu in)
  • 1 liter (L) = 1 cubic decimeter (dm3) = 1,000 cubic centimeters (cm3) = 0.001 cubic meters (m3)
