## About ton of oil equivalent

The **ton of oil equivalent** (or **tonne of oil equivalent**) is a unit of energy or work equal to approximately 4.1868 × 10^{10} joules (1 TOE = 4.1868 × 10^{10} J), the SI derived unit of energy.

The ton of oil equivalent (TOE) is also equal to 4.1868 × 10^{7} kilojoules (kJ), or 41,868 megajoules (MJ), or 41.868 gigajoules (GJ), or 3.9683205 × 10^{7} British thermal units (IT) (BTU), or 2.2046226 × 10^{7} Celsius heat units (IT) (CHU), or 1.00066922 × 10^{7} kilocalories (thermochemical) (kcal) or 11,630 kilowatt hours (kWh).

The tonne of oil equivalent is the approximate energy that results by burning one tonne of crude oil. The tonne is a non-SI unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms.

As different crude oils have different calorific values, the value of tonnes of oil equivalent may vary between 41 and 45.2 gigajoules. By convention, the value of tonnes of oil equivalent is considered to be approximately 42 gigajoules.
