What is ton of oil equivalent?

The ton of oil equivalent (or tonne of oil equivalent) is a unit of energy or work equal to approximately 4.1868x1010 joules (1 TOE = 4.1868x1010 J), the SI derived unit of energy. It is also equal to 4.1868x107 kilojoules (kJ), or 41,868 megajoules (MJ), or 41.868 gigajoules (GJ), or 3.9683205x107 British thermal units (IT) (BTU), or 2.2046226x107 Celsius heat units (IT) (CHU), or 1.00066922x107 kilocalories (thermochemical) (kcal) or 11,630 kilowatt hours (kWh).

The tonne of oil equivalent is the approximate energy that results by burning one tonne of crude oil. The tonne is a non-SI unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms.

As different crude oils have different calorific values, the value of tonnes of oil equivalent may vary between 41 and 45.2 gigajoules. By convention, the value of tonnes of oil equivalent is considered to be approximately 42 gigajoules.
