About microgram

The microgram is a unit of mass in the metric system equal to 10-9 kilograms (1 μg = 10-9 kg), the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI).

One microgram (μg) is also equal to 10-6 grams (g), or 0.001 milligrams (mg) or 1,000 nanograms (ng) (SI units of mass), or approximately 2.20462 × 10-9 pounds (lb) or 35.27396 × 10-9 ounces (oz), which are US customary / Imperial units of mass.

The microgram is one of the smallest units of mass (or weight) used.

The microgram is commonly used in scientific literature and healthcare settings. In the hospitals the symbol "mcg" is recommended instead of "μg" due to the risk that the symbol "μ" might be misinterpreted as "m" which would result in a 1,000-fold overdose.
